Das Palazzo in WHV und andere Untergänge

Mit dem Musikclub Kling Klang ↑ sind die Wilhelmshavener eigentlich recht gut versorgt, wenn es um alternativ-progressive Musikkultur geht (jedenfalls besser als manch anderer Teil der Region). Dennoch kommt bei vielen einstigen Jugendlichen der Stadt Wehmut auf, wenn es um die damaligen progressiven Diskotheken wie „Voom Voom“ und vor allem „Palazzo“ geht.

Ein Ort, über den Wolle Willig in seinem Beitrag zum Diskotheken-Ausstellungskatalog des Schlossmuseums Jever ↑ schrieb: „Vor allem aber war diese Institution über zwei Jahrzehnte ‚der‘ Treffpunkt der Wilhelmshavener Jugend. Es lässt sich kaum ermessen, wie viel in diesen ‚heiligen Hallen‘ gefeiert, geliebt und geheult worden ist“. Tatsächlich – wie in der Ausstellung ja auch sehr deutlich wurde – kann man die Bedeutung dieser Läden für seine jugendlichen Gäste kaum hoch genug einschätzen: „Für unsere damalige Clique wurde es zum zweiten Wohnzimmer. Zeitweise waren wir, auch unter der Woche, fast jeden Abend da, schwebten in selbst gebatikten Klamotten schon kurz nach 20 Uhr zu Mike Oldfields ‚Tubular Bells‘ – in voller Länge ausgespielt – über die Tanzfläche und ließen uns am Wochenende erst um 3 Uhr morgens mit Vangelis’ Sphärenklängen zum Ausgang scheuchen“ (Gegenwind, Palazzo is back ↑).

Das „Palazzo“ wurde Ende 1977 eröffnet und hat sich als letzte progressive Diskothek der Region Wihelmshaven/Friesland bis in die 00er Jahre hinein gehalten. Im Gegenwind-Beitrag heißt es dazu: „Über die Jahre hinterließen die Gäste ihre Spuren, nicht nur am Interieur, auch am Ruf des Palazzo. Zu junges Publikum, zu viel Vandalismus im Umfeld bis hin zu unschönen Auseinandersetzungen, die von unangenehmen Zeitgenossen provoziert wurden, schlugen auf die Sympathiewerte bei Anwohnern, Erziehungsberechtigten, Polizei und jenen Gästen, die dort einfach nur klönen und tanzen wollten“.

Das „die Besucher immer ätzender werden“ (Forum „Schwarzer Norden“, Palazzo in WHV schließt vorrübergehend ↑) ist eine Erfahrung, die manch andere Disko auch erleben mußte. Das „Palazzo“ jedenfalls wurde geschlossen und 2010 noch einmal unter neuen Besitzern und mit großen Hoffnungen neu eröffnet. Jahren des Auf und Ab folgte dann die endgültige Schließung des „Palazzo“ Ende 2014.

Das Zeitalter der progressiven Diskotheken scheint unwiederbringlich vorbei zu sein. Neustart-Versuche der letzten Zeit sind allesamt gescheitert, zuletzt das Bestreben, den legendären „Pleasuredome“ (vormals „Colosseum“) in Oppenwehe wiederzubeleben. Vom „Circuz Musicuz“ in Märschendorf hört man auch nichts mehr. Der Erfolg der zahllosen Revival-Parties täuscht darüber hinweg, dass es schlichtweg an Besuchern mangelt, die nicht nur ein- oder zweimal im Jahr kommen, sondern mindestens wöchentlich. Und das müßte es schon sein, wenn eine Disko überleben soll. Ein anderer Stellenwert von Musik bei vielen einstigen und heutigen Jugendlichen, der Erfolg der Festivals, ein geändertes Freizeitverhalten – heute ticken die Uhren anders.

Das Anliegen der Diskotheken-Ausstellung im Schlossmuseum Jever ist es bis auf den heutigen Tag, an diese oft schon vergessenen Diskotheken und ihren einstigen Status zu erinnern. Beispielsweise an das Elysium (Edewechterdamm), das Ex (Aurich), das Madhouse (Leer), das Old Crow (Friesoythe), das Apollo (Nordenham), das Shelter (Ihrhove), das Rock Paradise (Lintel), das Why Not (Oldenburg), das Mythos (Falkenburg), den Dorfkrug (Varelbusch), zu denen nur wenige Erinnerungen und kaum Infos verfügbar sind.

Oliver Reiners, einstiger „Zoo-ler“, hat uns einige Fotos zur Verfügung gestellt, die den heutigen maladen Zustand des vormals stadtbildprägenden Gebäudes aufzeigen, in dem das „Palazzo“ logierte. Es ist häufig die Musik, um die die Erinnerungen kreisen, vermutlich weil sie sich am leichtesten reproduzieren lassen. Aus so mancher Disko kursieren Mixtapes. Viele nahmen sich Best-Of-Kassetten mit den für sie wichtigsten Stücken auf. Auch Oliver Reiners hat damals einen CD-Sampler mit den besten bzw. für ihn wichtigsten Stücken aus dem „Palazzo“ erstellt:

  3. Was haben meine Clique und ich dort gefeiert! Für uns gab es eigentlich nichts anderes. Von 1988 bis Mitte der 90er war der Laden praktisch unser Zuhause, unser Wohnzimmer. Es schmerzt, wenn man den Untergang dieser Institution spürbar wahrnimmt. Legendär waren das Germania Bier und die Heiße Hexe Snacks, deren Geschmack man zwei Tage später noch im Mund hatte. Die erste Liebe, der erste Trennungsschmerz… all das hat man mit seinen Freunden dort verarbeitet. Wir sind, wir waren und werden es immer sein…

    • Besser kann man es nicht formulieren! Wenn ich in einer ruhigen Stunde mal den einschlägigen Hits der Ramones, R.E.M., Fury i. t. S. oder Midnight Oil lausche, dann werden die Erinnerungen an die damalige tolle Palazzo-Zeit wieder lebendig. Die größte Sorge war an jenen Abenden eigentlich, dass man seine Getränkekarte nicht verliert, denn dies hätte beim Verlassen der Räumlichkeiten nicht nur zu unangenehmen Diskussionen mit dem Personal geführt, sondern auch zu schmerzhaften Einschnitten ins begrenzte finanzielle Budget. Die „Strafe“ für eine verbummelte Karte war doch relativ gesalzen – umso mehr, wenn man noch einkommensschwacher Schüler, Student oder Azubi war.
